Gordon Brown is to attend an emergency pan-European summit on financial stability.

Gordon Brown is to attend an emergency pan-European summit on financial stability this Saturday, hosted in Paris by current holders of the rotating EU presidency France.

Italian and German leaders Silvio Berlusconi and Angela Merkel, as well as European Commission president Jose Manuel Barrosso and ECB governor Jean-Claude Trichet will also be present.

French finance minister Christine Lagarde has indicated that a rescue package of EUR 300 billion for Europe’s banks is on the table, but president Nicolas Sarkozy has since distanced himself from the suggestion he favours such a plan.
