THE government is set to acquire the Swiss bank account details of up to 6,600 wealthy Britons suspected of evading tax after data were stolen from HSBC by one of its workers.

THE government is set to acquire the Swiss bank account details of up to 6,600 wealthy Britons suspected of evading tax after data were stolen from HSBC by one of its workers.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) expects to benefit from the exploits of Hervé Falciani, a French software engineer.

He illegally obtained the details of 24,000 customers with accounts at HSBC’s private bank in Switzerland while working for the company in Geneva three years ago.

Falciani, 38, has sold some of the information to the French government, which has used it to begin a tax investigation.

Now the taxman is about to get the details of British account holders from its French counterpart as part of an information exchange.
