A magnificent range of works from classic antique furniture to extraordinary modern pieces will go on show when the BADA Antiques & Fine Art Fair opens its doors to collectors from around the world at Duke of York Square, off Sloane Square, London SW3, from 13 – 19 March 2013.

The Fair is the only internationally renowned event exclusive to members of the British Antique Dealers’ Association, representing the UK’s leading specialists, and as such has built an unrivalled reputation for quality.

This year the Fair, which is held in a superb location in one of London’s most fashionable districts, marks its 21st birthday, and its exhibitors will be bringing their best pieces to put on display. There will also be a unique loan exhibition of rarely seen works by the great English watercolourist William Payne.

Jonathan Cooper will bring a vibrant study of a Macaw by Elizabeth Butterworth (pictured above) whose ornithological knowledge and striking attention to detail lead her to be described in 1993 by the art historian and critic Ian Dunlop as “without rival this century”.

Godson & Coles will exhibit a Regency period japanned sofa table (English, circa 1820), which has ornate oriental scenes based on the engravings of William Alexander, the first Western artist allowed to travel and sketch in the interior of China. These two tables, separated by centuries, nationality and by many artistic movements, share a rarity and beauty that earns them both a place under the canopies of the BADA Fair.

Paintings are similarly varied this year: portraits include Portrait of a Derbyshire Lady in costume (c. 1760, pictured above) by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797), exhibited by Thomas Coulborn & Sons, and Portrait with Pears, (1944) by London’s own Michael Ayrton (1921-1975), displayed on the Strachan Fine Art stand.

The aristocratic opulence and Rococo style of the former makes for a striking contrast with the wartime austerity and solid, sculptural style of the latter. Sylvia Powell will bring a selection of ceramics by Picasso, while jewellery from all corners of the world will be available at Sandra Cronan’s stand.

Unique Loan Exhibition
A unique loan exhibition of rarely seen works by the influential English watercolourist William Payne will go on show at the BADA Fair. All the paintings in the exhibition, entitled William Payne (1760–1830): Topographer and Artist of the Picturesque, will be lent by four private collectors and have rarely been seen in public.

The show, curated by the expert and Fair exhibitor John Spink, will display scenes of Devon, Cornwall and South Wales painted by Payne in the late 18th century alongside contemporary photographs of the same places. The exhibition, sponsored by the insurance brokers CBC UK, will provide both a fascinating historical record and a long overdue tribute to an artist who played an important part in the development of British watercolour painting.

A fully illustrated hardback book on the exhibition is to be published. In it the author, David Japes, an expert on Payne, writes: ‘During his time in Plymouth, and in a creative burst of activity, Payne left an important record of the 18th century both there and in the South West. What has made the record invaluable is the accuracy of Payne’s topography.

‘This emerged clearly from the decision to place recent photographs next to the watercolours. It was relatively easy in each case to establish the artist’s viewpoint; less easy to obtain a clear prospect from it such has been the scale of urban development.’

Charity Gala Dinner
This year’s Charity Gala Dinner on 14 March in the Cellini Restaurant will be hosted by UCARE, an Oxford-based charity founded in 2007 by consultants, doctors, nurses, and patients. By supporting scientists and medical practitioners who are undertaking research of international significance, UCARE’s vision is to improve the outcome of treatment for urological cancers. Since its inception, BADA Fair has helped to raise nearly £20 million pounds for charity and it is delighted to be supporting UCARE this year.

The Cellini Restaurant and The Duke of York Brasserie will be providing food and refreshments and the world-renowned and family-owned champagne house Taittinger will once again be the Fair’s champagne sponsors.

Dior Illustrations
Gray Modern & Contemporary Art will be showing, a series of original working fashion illustrations by Facon-Marrec, drawn from Christian Dior’s Spring/Summer 1948 & Autumn/Winter 1948 collections. (Dior’s first collection was launched in Paris in February 1947.)

Facon-Marrec’s work captures the essence of The New Look. He was a well know illustrator of the time, working for among other labels Gaine Scandal, Martell & Dana Perfumes. From 1930 – 1950 many of his advertising illustrations were published in magazines such as Plaisir de France.
