Patek Philippe returns with the ‘Ref 6007A Calatrava’

By Anna Solomon

After a lengthy hiatus, watch behemoth Patek Philippe has released a new limited edition watch with a unique design.

Horologists might have had to wait, but Patek Phillipe’s brand new timepiece, the Ref 6007A Calatrava, is here. It features a cambered bezel in polished steel (the ‘A’ stands for acier, or steel, a coveted material among connoisseurs). The dial architecture is unique, from the railway track scale of the hour circle to the pierced baton hands for the hours and minutes. Introduce the self-winding caliber 324 S C movement, an aperture date at 3 o’clock, and applied Arabic numerals, and the picture of elegance is complete.

The graphic style of the Calatrava reflects the technical personality of the dial. Its gray-blue hue and a subtle satin finish contrasts with the white dial imprints and the white-lacquered hands. in its centre, the dial features a ‘carbon-style’ texture that plays with light. Finally, the colour-coordinated calfskin strap features white seams, a prong buckle and a delicately embossed structure.

It is a tradition at Patek Philippe to accompany key events with the launch of commemorative watches; the Ref. 5500 Pagoda and the Ref. 5029 Minute Repeater were limited editions brought out at the official inauguration of the new manufacture in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva. Similarly, the Ref 6007A Calatrava has been created to mark the opening of  Patek Philippe’s new production facility, also in Plan-les-Ouates.

1000 pieces of the commemorative timepiece will be manufactured, each with a diameter of 40mm and a sapphire-crystal caseback marked with a Calatrava cross and the ‘New Manufacture 2019’ inscription (the year that the first work groups moved into the new production building).

This is a small fraction of what we might have seen from Patek this year if it were not for the disruption of coronavirus, but the Calatrava does not disappoint.
