Unsurprisingly Ed Miliband was on fighting form this PMQs, and Cameron was firmly on the defensive following the Hunt scandal and today’s news of a double dip recession.
Miliband accused the Prime Minister of ‘arrogance’ and ‘complacency’ regarding the economy and blamed government spending cuts for the recession. Cameron’s ‘plan has failed’ he said, and ‘the reality is this a recession made by him and the chancellor in Downing Street.’ Echoing Tory backbenchers he said that the government consisted were ‘the complacent arrogant posh boys just don’t get it.’
Cameron’s argument that ‘the solution to a debt crisis cannot be more debt’ and his promise that he ‘won’t let anyone forget who got us into this mess in the first place’ sounded increasingly tired when pitted against Miliband’s smug vindication.
Moving on from the ‘economic disaster’ Miliband said he wanted to move on to the ‘political disaster’ that is Jeremy Hunt. To loud boos, Cameron tried to move the conversation back to the economy before reminding parliament that he had set up the Leveson Inquiry.
Miliband accused Cameron of ‘pathetic answers’, and Cameron looked increasingly riled. ‘Lord Leveson is responsible for many things, but not the integrity of the government’ Miliband goaded, ‘the prime minister is responsible for that.’ These kinds of embarrassments are becoming a bit of a ‘pattern with the prime minister’ he said and it’s ‘time to stop putting his cronies before the needs of the country.’
Cameron pledged his ‘full support’ for Jeremy Hunt, so it will be interesting to hear Hunt’s statement at 12.30. Cameron became increasingly confident towards the end of PMQs, but it was definitely 1-0 to Miliband today.
