The Spear’s 1 Per Cent Campaign

By Spear's

Today we launch our 1 Per Cent Campaign. We will be partnering with a number of charities and organisations who can offer our readers, the 1 Per Cent and those who work with them, imaginative and significant ways in which to help the less fortunate.

THROUGHOUT 2012, WE will be introducing our partner charities and organisations who, we hope, can inspire our readers to give time, expertise and money to a cause they feel a connection with. Whether they are high-net-worth individuals who have built their own fortunes or professionals who work with the wealthy in an advisory capacity, Spear’s readers have all the resources to be able to engage in meaningful, sustainable philanthropy. We are excited to present them with ways in which they can do this across a spectrum of good causes.

WE BELIEVE

1. That not just money but also time and expertise can be given philanthropically.

2. That in the current period of austerity, the need for people to give is even greater.

3. That government funding cuts to the third sector are undermining charities’ ability to do their work; the time, expertise and money of successful individuals are therefore crucial to the sector’s continuity.

4. That Spear’s readers — wealthy, creative and entrepreneurial — have the resources to make a difference through their philanthropy.

OUR SUPPORTERS

‘We are doing a great deal in government to encourage more philanthropy, but this would of course be fruitless without the generosity of individuals who are prepared to support causes that they feel passionately about. Giving money is important, but offering time, expertise, advice and opportunities can be equally valuable.

‘I would urge anyone who feels ready to give something back to think carefully about who they want to support, spend some time getting to know an organisation and consider making a long-term commitment of support. Offering help of any kind can be enormously rewarding and gratifying, and I thoroughly applaud Spear’s for encouraging its readers to help those who are less advantaged with the launch of the 1 Per Cent Campaign.’

Ed Vaizey MP, minister for Culture

‘Philanthropy, through the giving of time and money, has a vital role to play in tackling social problems in these difficult economic times. Spear’s 1 Per Cent Campaign gets all of us to think about the opportunities for making a difference and what we each have to offer.’

Michael Green, author of Philanthrocapitalism

‘Philanthropy is never more important than in this year of austerity. Congratulations to Spear’s on its moral leadership in launching the 1 Per Cent Campaign to encourage private donors to give their resources in ways that appeal to each individual, and so reach out to meet societal needs and make a real difference in material terms. Such generosity gives its return in personal wellbeing.’

Dame Stephanie Shirley, National ambassador for philanthropy 2009-10
