Marcus Wareing’s Diary

By Spear's

Private viewings of James Bond’s Skyfall, dining at Tom Aikens’ Chelsea restaurant and seeing in Movember at The Gilbert Scott: a week in the life of two michelin-starred chef Marcus Wareing.

Yet another week and month have flown by. My three children spent last night trick or treating the locals. After the sugar rush, and once they were finally settled in bed, I made a simple risotto for my wife Jane and I. One of my favorite quick, home dishes, I make your traditional white risotto base and simply shave fabulous white truffle onto it and drizzle with olive oil – delicious!

I broke a bone in my foot six weeks ago in a charity boxing match — I hasten to add it was not kick boxing I was just a little over-zealous with the training. This week I was pleased to be able to try walking again in a pair of matching shoes, rather than a supportive boot, as life has been a little tricky getting around. Particularly on Sundays, watching my son play rugby for four hours at festivals is thrilling but becoming a little cold. Back to wellingtons next week.

I was very kindly invited to enjoy lunch at Tom Aikens’ restaurant in Chelsea, there were a bunch of fellow chefs. It is a very small world and we are all quite familiar with one another so it’s interesting to meet and catch up and see how the industry is doing across the board.

My wife Jane and I were lucky enough to receive an invitation to a private viewing of Skyfall. Of course this caused great consternation with our two sons who are desperate to see the film. Bollinger champagne has appeared in the Bond movies for the past 39 years and they were fabulous hosts, the film didn’t disappoint either! I may have to go again with the boys.

We now have two restaurants in our fold, my eponymous restaurant at The Berkeley and The Gilbert Scott at St Pancras. Both are completely unique but are part of the same group and this is something we are now trying to highlight to our existing and new clients. It’s exciting to be involved with the design of a new group webpage and some printed literature.

As we head in to the festive period I am delighted to see a filling diary. We are nearly fully booked for private dining at Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley and after last week’s positive news on the growth of the British economy perhaps it is just the boost that we all need. It has been a challenging year but the forthcoming months are extremely positive for both restaurants as we head into a new and exciting year.

I am delighted that my team at The Gilbert Scott is supporting Movember; a moustache growing charity raising funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer. I am currently sporting a beard and I arrived at the restaurant this morning expecting to see everyone with matching ‘taches’ but apparently everyone starts from clean shaven today! I am intrigued to see what the girls will do; there are plans afoot I hear!

I have quite a lot planned for next week, we have an exclusive use at Marcus Wareing at the Berkeley, I am cooking at the home of one of our clients and mid-week I will be a guest at an event in my own private room with Johnnie Walker Blue Label. Something I have never done before, but equally something I am really looking forward to. The only way to truly understand how it feels to be a dinner guest is to be one!
