Frieze Art Fair will launch two new art fairs next year, its co-founders Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover announced on Thursday. The influential London contemporary art fair will launch a similar event in New York in 2012, and will organise its first Frieze Masters fair in London next year, showing work made before the year 2000.

Frieze Art Fair New York will take place on 3-6 May 2012, and is due to house approximately 170 contemporary art galleries in a bespoke structure overlooking the East River in Randall’s Island Park, Manhattan.

The Frieze Masters exhibition will coincide with the London Frieze Art Fair on 11-14 October 2012, and will present 70 international galleries showing work ranging from antiquities and old masters through to art of the 20th century.

Nicholas Penny, director of the National Gallery, which is supporting the event, said that ‘the fair is designed to revolutionise the relationship between ancient and modern, old and new.’

Frieze Art Fair was launched in 2003 and now receives over 60,000 visitors a year, establishing the event as a leading showcase for contemporary art in London.
