Bringing a taste of Palm Springs to the Algarve, The Magnolia Hotel is a summer getaway of dreams
Arriving at The Magnolia Hotel feels like stepping back in time. Its 1950s aesthetic is reminiscent of the American motel glory days, complete with neon signage, sunshine yellow loungers and equally bright smiles from the welcoming staff.
Surrounded by the Algarve’s sun-kissed coastline and with the Quinta do Lago luxury resort right on its doorstep, this boutique hotel is where relaxation and adventure come together.
Expertly blending quality service with feel-good charm, the vibrant and stylish hotel boasts 74 elegant and comfortable rooms, 7 vintage cabin-style Cottages, a colourful in-house restaurant, heated outdoor pool, gymnasium, spa and even a cinema.
Open since October last year, the property is the latest addition to Quinta do Lago’s hospitality offering. Its 74 rooms and three suites are housed in two blocks that sit just beyond the L-shaped saltwater pool. Inside, each room comes with its own veranda and flaunts personal design touches.
The hotel’s charming, cabin-style cottages offer a retreat amongst the pine trees in a quieter part of the grounds. Each cottage has a bedroom with a divinely comfortable double bed, bathroom, living-dining room, patio and a kitchenette and is an ideal space for a dreamy getaway.
As the day heats up, it’s time to head over to the pool. Fringing the water’s edge, sunflower-hued loungers and white pinstripe umbrellas give you the option to soak up the rays or bathe in the shade. After a cooling dip, lunch at the hotel’s restaurant awaits. Chef Tom Briggs, who heralds from Soho House and Hoxton Grill, cooks up a storm in the open kitchen. Choose ‘The Mag Burger’ to give your fellow diners food envy or tuck into an abundant bowl of goodness with a superfood salad.
After eating al-fresco, embrace the afternoon and head out to explore the surrounding nature park of Ria Formosa. The perfect way to see the area is by bike and The Magnolia Hotel has you covered with its fleet of Dutch bikes, available free for guests to borrow. Traditional Portuguese towns like Loulé, Tavira and Olhaõ dot the surrounding areas, ideal for a dose of sightseeing, history and culture.
Onsite, there’s plenty of opportunity to while away the hours before the first round of sundowners, either by the pool getting lost in a novel, playing board games in the chill out room, catching a movie at the hotel’s very own cinema or blissing out at the spa.
For something more adrenaline fuelled, the gym is a premium facility kitted out with all you need to work up a sweat. And if you want to make the most of the sun, visit Quinta do Lago’s new multi-sport complex The Campus, for a pumped-up round of padel or an impressive cycling tour of the Algarve’s abundant trails.
Aesthetically speaking, The Magnolia Hotel dazzles with Miami-inspired kitsch, pastel hued furnishings, strawberry bonbon banquettes, palm-frond tiles and quirky abstract art. And, with the setting sun, the festoon lights begin to twinkle above the poolside cocktail bar, inviting you to sit back and escape to their world.
