Ocean Quest Director & Founder, Mr. Annuar Abdullah, who has worked in coral propagation for more than 30 years in various parts of the world, was recently invited back at the resort to survey the evolution of the underwater coral reef nursery that was set up at the beautiful Koh Haa archipelago, in December last year. The project aims to generate interest among the participants to improve awareness of the importance of sustainable and healthier coral reefs.
The creation of self-sustaining, naturally growing habitats that are favorable for all marine life can also benefit local communities by providing better fishing grounds as well as providing jobs in the local travel industry. Mr Annuar and his team are now fully committed to the resort to continue this program on a yearly basis. Pimalai’s strategy is to also involve the diving businesses and community on Koh Lanta to participate in the program. The concept is not only to plant corals, but to also help grow their “inspiration” into preserving the environment and nature at the sea. This time, hundred volunteers (far more than what we expected!…) – snorkelers and divers alike – took part in this underwater initiative, which is now becoming one of the most talked conservation project in the area. Mr Annuar and his team also coordinated a 4 days training program for qualified dive masters from various Koh Lanta ‘s dive centers so these can in the future help and teach the community /tourists on Koh Lanta to expand this activity.
The project was run jointly by Pimalai Resort and Spa together with the 5 ***** PADI Scubafish@Pimalai dive center. Again this year we were pleased to receive a generous sponsorship from the well-known Thai Company B.GRIMM Group. Finally the heads Phi Phi islands, Phang Gna and Koh Lanta were all on hand to witness and understand the project and so to get full support in the year to come in their respective area. Famous Marine Scientitst Dr. Thon Thumrongnavasawat also came to inspect the program.
