The new edition of Spear’s: How Putin spooked the London property market — and more

By Alec Marsh

Out now, the March/April edition of Spear’s: How Putin spooked the London property market, Winston Churchill’s niece — and much more, writes Spear’s editor Alec Marsh

Where have all the Russians gone? That’s the question that emerged when our team at Spear’s began probing the London property market for our annual power list of the top 50 property advisers in the business.

While the rest of the world was obsessing about McMafia, we were discovering that far from being the driving force of London’s prime property market, that in fact the Russians had vanished as a force at the top of the market — inspiring the stunning Constructivist cover story of this edition. Pick up the latest copy to find find out how President Putin spooked the London property market in latest edition — and discover who Spear’s thinks the best 50 property advisers in the business are.

Next, as the world goes equally Winston Churchill crazy, we have an exclusive interview with his niece — the 97-year-old Clarissa Eden, who was also the wife of Anthony Eden, the prime minister who took Britain into Suez in 1956. Turn to the latest edition of Spear’s to enjoy Eden’s remembrances of time in Downing Street or Chartwell with her uncle during the war.

As well as an astonishing conversation with this first-hand witness to history, we also have the professional contrarian and educationalist Toby Young in our guest diary, writing about the impact of the recent public furore that he found himself at the centre of. It’s had quite an effect on him, he reveals to Spear’s.

And with the Six Nations upon us, we also hear from the England and Harlequins Rugby player Chris Robshaw, who is in our Midas interview. Who’s his hero? What’s his guilty pleasure and favourite restaurant… you’ll find out in Spear’s.

We also meet Paul Abberley, the dynamic CEO of wealth manager Charles Stanley, while our editor-at-large William Cash meets the new aristocrats of Airbnb — the men and women making their country houses pay their way. And look at how they’re doing it. And we take a closer look at Saudi Arabia’s bold plans to decarbonise its economy.

Meanwhile our columnist Elizabeth Hurley this time leads explores the art of perfect skincare and her new garden in Herefordshire. With other regulars including Lucia van der Post, John Arlidge, Tim Barber, Nick Foulkes, Ross Clark and Clive Aslet, this is a corner of luxury lifestyle worthy of close attention. Among the highlights we also have Bruce Oldfield who talks to Olenka Hamilton about the reinvention of Princess Diana’s style.

What else? I also visit the Gstaad Palace in Switzerland, where I get a close look at the summit of the Matterhorn at 4,478m above sea level, on a helicopter safari of the Alps — quite simply one of the best ways you can enjoy the mountains that doesn’t involve skis. The things I do for Spear’s
