Urban meets Alpine in Hôtel Mil8 – an architecturally striking hotel in Avoriaz with chic interiors, on-trend cuisine, and an organic spa
Hôtel Mil8 is named after the altitude of the French ski resort of Avoriaz – at 1,800m, it is the highest and most snow-sure village in the famed Portes du Soleil area. Situated within the resort, which was created in 1966 as a fantasy-inspired getaway, Hôtel Mil8 opened its doors for the winter 2019/20 ski season in December, partnering with ESF ski school to organise lessons and equipment hire for guests.
The hotel’s 42 rooms and suites balance the contemporary and inviting. Parisian interior designers Catherine and Jérôme Clermont from Atelier Obermant have matched the hotel’s decor with the architecture, combining natural materials such as wood, leather and wool with urban textures such as concrete and steel. Although each room is unique, they are united by a thread of light birch wood, recalling the local Alpine environment.
Local architect Hervé Marullaz has created a butterfly-esque shape for the exterior of Hôtel Mil8. The fan-structure is adorned with balconies yielding panoramic views of the surrounding snowy peaks, whilst the grey larch façade blends with the silver-wood tiles that characterise the roofs of Avoriaz.
The hotel’s glass-fronted wellness centre boasts an infinity pool, sauna, gym, and massage room spread across four levels, with each space looking out onto breath-taking views of the resort. Hôtel MiL8 has partnered with SNÖ eternelle, an organic skincare brand created by Olympic Silver medalist skier Raphaëlle Monod and based on organic and active Nordic ingredients, to provide excellent treatments.
The hotel lobby exudes comfort, with a vast leather sofa and open fireplace providing the perfect spot to relax with an aperitif. Equally inviting is the bar, which serves everything from hot chocolate, tea, and coffee to delicious cocktails and a selection of vintage wines, as well as snack foods such as tempura, cheese platters and classic Panisse.
For something a little more substantial, Hôtel MiL8 has two restaurants: one at piste level for lunchtime skiers, and a more intimate ground floor space for dinner. In a setting of wood-clad walls and low lighting, the chef serves on-trend menus that blend healthy eating with responsible local sourcing.
Children are warmly welcomed at Hôtel MiL8, which offers a play area with a mini climbing wall as well as healthy menus for kids. The hotel also provides cots, baby baths, thermometers, bottle warmers, changing mats, and mountain strollers on request. Babysitting can also be arranged with a supplementary charge.
The hotel is also work-friendly. Businesses can operate out of the hotel’s stylish 46 metre-squared meeting space – an area flooded with natural light and served by a private terrace – or conduct team building activities within the resort.
Hôtel MiL8 is a two hour drive from Geneva International Airport and 90 minutes from Geneva train station. Nightly rates start from €250 per room per night on a bed and breakfast basis.
