Daniel Webb

By Rasika Sittamparam

Immaculate and with superb manners, Daniel Webb has found his passion: he joined Kleinwort Benson, had a spell at Coutts and then moved to HSBC, where he has a ‘very engaged international client base from entrepreneurial and financial services backgrounds’.

‘It’s an opportunity to be the master of your own domain. We’re given the freedom to give our clients what they need. In a given day, 50 per cent of my day is with clients,’ explains Webb, who has a lifelong passion for financial markets and cites Warren Buffett as a hero. ‘I bought my first stock at 18: I was always interested in companies. I like business; on the weekend I’ll trawl through annual reports.’

Webb, who studied abroad, is interested in international affairs, and in the flow of capital.

So what does he see happening at the moment? ‘There’s been a shift of clients allocating more to private equity. Bearing in mind the bull market, those who’ve been invested for the last years have had a good few years. But clients are cautious – it’s not euphoria.’

The overwhelming majority of HSBC clients are long-term investors. Nick Milne is another widely well-regarded figure in the HNW space at this firm, while Chris Arbuthnott is, for one peer, ‘the best banker in Scotland’.
