Preview: Restaurants at the Frieze London and Frieze Masters art fairs

By Spear's

As well as the endless parties, exhibitions and parades of arty folk, there is actually a huge amount on offer food-wise

Next week is Frieze Week – you’ll be hearing a lot more about this from us come Monday, with Josh Spero’s diary. But there’s food for the stomach as well as food for the eyes.

As well as the endless parties, exhibitions and parades of arty folk there is actually a huge amount on offer food wise (pictured left: sashimi at the Umu stand). Helpful when you consider how tiring running from party to launch to party can be.

So if you are heading to Regent’s to indulge your artistic eye, here is the low-down on where to indulge your equally discerning stomach.

Frieze Masters

In the Masters fair this year, you will find Locanda Locatelli and Umu.

Locanda Locatelli will be offering a pop-up stall where you will be able to get your hands on a selection of pastas, salads and risottos all devised by Giorgio Locatelli. Wine will be available too  Italian, of course. If that isn’t sufficiently enticing, you can opt to add freshly shaved truffles to your chosen dish. Well, it is the start of the truffle season, after all.

Umu will be running an à la carte restaurant and bar again this year, offering Japanese hot dishes, signature sashimi and refreshing cocktails.

Created by executive chef Yoshinori Ishii, dishes will include bento boxes, the Umu ‘fish and chips’ tempura and lightly grilled wagyu beef. All rather lovely. The bar will offer Japanese cocktails as well as a wide selection of wines and champagnes.

Frieze London

In the original fair you will find a wide selection of well-known names offering tasty treats – from Rochelle Canteen in the VIP room to Caravan (pictured below), Gail’s Artisan Bakery and, of course, Hix.

Interestingly, though, this year Frieze will be featuring a little more street food and will be hosting Pizza Pilgrims, Pitt Cue Co and Yum Bun on the outside deck. So not only can you look at the best contemporary art, you can sample some of the best contemporary food too. Not a bad day out if you ask me.
