Key AW14 style trends for men

By Spear's

Author: Zahra Al-Kateb

With sweatpants from Rick Owens and stylish sneakers from Jimmy Choo, it’s all about making a statement with bold checkered prints and velvet accessories in deep, rich colour palettes for AW14. Stay ahead of the game with this comprehensive new guide, where we break down the key themes and trends for this Autumn/Winter and gain an insight into what men’s wardrobes will be featuring next season.

Portrait bags

Call it a man bag, call it a purse, but evidence suggests that a portrait bag is the must-have accessory this season. The St. Ives in multicolour flat weave from Burberry (pictured) is defined by its portrait shape and its abstract art print, inspired by the worlds and works of Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood. For a more subtle style, try the Cabas Zippe North/South tote from Saint Laurent. Its portrait shape provides plenty of height and the simple silhouette and clean lines ensure it will always remain a classic.

Slip-on trainers

Think trainers are just for the gym? Think again. Sports luxe has already been a huge trend this year and looks set to be even bigger this season. This versatile and fun slip-on pair from Jimmy Choo (pictured) will add a relaxed edge to your weekend wardrobe. We also love these studded slip-ons from Valentino which will add a gothic edge to your outfit.

Fur

Ever considered adding a trim of fur here or there? Trust us, it can be manly too: think rugged Arctic explorer. This cosy pair of Marni fur and leather trimmed gloves will help you keep fashionably warm this season. The contrasting textures of cashmere, supple leather and plush shearling guarantee comfort and style. Alternatively, try the fur-lined cotton trapper hat from Gucci.

Burgundy

As summer draws to a close, bright and pastel colours are pushed to the back of the wardrobe as we make room for darker, richer tones. There is no easier way to introduce a new colour than through an accessory and we love this new offering from MCM. Designed in a cocoon shape, the AW14 Theo (pictured) boasts a minimalistic façade emphasising the body material of smooth nappa calf leather. Another cult favourite – the Balenciaga Arena leather high top sneakers – have also undergone the burgundy treatment. Try with indigo jeans for an effortless look.

Check and tweed

Ideal for the cooler months ahead, the thick rugged texture of tweed is sure to keep you warm this season. This Saint Laurent red and black plaid wool jacket (pictured) makes a great statement piece. Similarly, these check trousers from Alexander McQueen feature contrasting patches and zips for a truly unique look. As well as this, they are made from wool and cashmere – key textiles for next season.

Velvet

While it’s been a trend for several years running, 2014 has seen even more designers falling for this plush fabric. This velvet tuxedo jacket from Alexander McQueen (pictured) is a modern yet classic alternative to a wool suit. The contrasting silk lapel creates a tailored, elegant look. For a more understated nod to the trend, try a velvet bow tie – such as this one from Lanvin – to add the smallest touch of velvet detail to your outfit.

McQueen Blazer

Sweatpants

Gone are the days when sweatpants were our guilty secret. In fact, in recent years they have become something of a phenomenon. From designers such as Isabel Marant and Alexander Wang, to high street stores such as Zara and Topshop, the sweatpant has returned largely in the form of the harem pant. The latest wool offering from Rick Owens (pictured) features a drawstring waist, a drop crotch and two side pockets. Alternatively, try these ‘baggy trousers’ from Zara.
