Put some sparkle in your Valentine’s Day with these drinks

By Spear's

This is my one concession to Valentine’s Day, and to be perfectly honest it is more a homage to beautiful beverages. It is a gloomy Friday in February and therefore later on today you will likely be in need of a little something to help you relax, especially if you are in the path of the rather unsavoury storm that is sweeping its way across the country. So, grab a suitable glass, pick your favourite from the below and enjoy.

First up – rosé champagne. And why not? A little something frivolous every now and then is just what the doctor ordered. Personally, I prefer Laurent Perrier‘s Rosé Cuvée or Bollinger’s NV Rosé (both around £40 at the moment on Ocado). They are both non-vintage wines so more reasonable on the price front and throughly drinkable. And if you’re planning a romantic meal tonight, check fine wine websites to see which foods they go best with.

Now, this one is technically red but that works just as well on Valentine’s day. For a real treat, why not get your hands on a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine de Vieux Télégraphe 2010. It isn’t cheap – £70 – but for anyone who likes a good red, this will not disappoint. Some say it is a little off its best and might be better saved for five years time but it drinks beautifully as is. So whether you buy now and keep it for Valentine’s Day 2019 or drink it tonight, you won’t regret it even if your purse feels a little on the light side for a while.

Finally, something a little snazzier from Fabrice Limon, the owner of Quintessentially Vodka. He has created the Vodka Rhubarb Rickey and has kindly sent over the recipe for anyone wanting to dazzle with their mixology skills this evening. Bonne chance.

35ml Quintessentially Vodka
12.5ml Rhubarb liqueur/syrup
12.5ml Fresh lime
Soda (top up)

Method: place the Quintessentially Vodka, rhubarb syrup and fresh lime in a tall glass, adding ice and a spritz of soda. To finish, stir a few times before adding a wedge of lime.
