Harry Smith grabbed headlines in March when he bought 13 Picassos on behalf of clients during a single week of auctions, to the tune of £113 million. ‘I’ve been in this game for over 40 years and this was very different to anything I’ve done before,’ he says. ‘Normally
I do it on the telephone so nobody knows it was me.’
Smith has presided over an exceptionally strong year at Gurr Johns, which has expanded into India and online through a new partnership with valuation app Collector IQ. ‘We want to make the valuation side of the business the Bloomberg of the art market,’ he says. ‘What we feel is people are now starting to look at their portfolios in a slightly different way, more as an important part of their overall wealth.’
