D-Hotel Maris, Turkey

By Spear's

Take a dramatic location, a delightful panorama and the deep turquoise of the sea where the Mediterranean meets the Aegean – and enjoy the view by staying at the D-Hotel Maris which sits high above the coastline. Discerning or demanding guests never fail to be delighted with what the hotel offers which not only includes five restaurants, one of which is a permanent Zuma outpost, and a choice of swimming pools — but best of all, five private sandy beaches. One notable beach for exclusive villa and suite guests is executive beach with cabanas and massage beds, and there is a silent beach where all cell phones, muzak and noise of any kind is banned. To ensure that each beach is kept in perfect condition over 250,000 tons of pale golden sand are brought in from Egypt each year to replenish the old. In addition the hotel is home to Bodyism’s first ever outdoor gym, a large fitness centre and exercise studio with a plethora of classes from spinning to stretch, aerobics to Zumba — and an elegant ESPA spa.

WHO
Glamorous couples, groups of friends and smart families from Istanbul, cool Scandinavians keen on water activities and sailing, others from across Europe and Russia who simply want to laze and luxuriate.

WHEN
High season is July and August when the hotel is almost fully booked with returning fans. Springtime is warm and the light on the sea and the islands around is magical, while late summer and early autumn often sees the best of the sun. The hotel closes at the beginning of November.

HAVE
If you have never experienced a hamam, this is the place to try it. The traditional Turkish steam, scrub and massage is like no other and your skin will be the cleanest and smoothest you could wish for; the hamam itself, a temple of carved white marble, adds to the pleasure. However, if travelling in high season, do book this treatment on arrival as it is the most popular of all. Also on offer is a wide selection of ESPA massages, scrubs and facials as well as their renowned Ayurvedic-inspired rituals.

DO
The choice is endless – hike, bike or simply explore the surrounding mountains. Take a guided kayak tour of the coastline or charter one of the hotel’s boats for the day – including an Azimut 55, a traditional wooden sailing yacht and a brand new 16m custom-made motor yacht – to explore neighbouring coves and beaches as well as the tiny islands which dot the area. Venture a little further and you can visit the Greek islands. Go to town to Datca or to the historic sites of Knidos with its temples of Apollo and Aphrodite. Or simply test the hotel’s five beaches.

BEST
It has to be the hamam, two hours (or even longer) of cleansing and anointing, pampering and pleasure. Round the whole holiday off by returning to the airport by helicopter – a magical bird’s eye view of the entire peninsula.
