By Spear's

Andy Murray’s victory last night in the US Open will no doubt have inspired many in the UK to pick up a tennis racquet and give it a go. For those just taking up the sport, there are few better places to be than London. In and around the capital are some of the most prestigious clubs in the UK, all with world-class coaches in residence and, just as importantly, excellent hospitality facilities.

Wherever you head for your first lessons, though — be it the local court or the immaculate grass of the Queen’s Club — some general points are worth bearing in mind. Getting the right kit is crucial and you should take particular care over choosing the right racquet; remember, there is no point paying hundreds for one before you’ve reached a certain level of ability. Head, Wilson and Slazenger are just three manufacturers that make excellent racquets for those just starting out.

This extract was taken from the Spear’s Sports Index, a guide for how to get started in sports from golf and polo to motor-racing and wing-walking. Read the whole guide to taking up tennis (and indeed the whole index) here.
