If you want explore Jersey and more importantly eat your way around the island, the best time is during the week-long Jersey Food Festival. The foodie knees-up takes place in May and celebrates the best of Jersey’s produce, from the good old Jersey Royal potato to fresh seafood and creamy dairy produce.
During the festival, The Atlantic Hotel, where I stayed on my jaunt to Jersey, has a few packages on offer to help you make the most of your time on the island: for those interested in where the produce comes from you can opt for a tour to the ormer farm with the hotel’s Michelin-starred chef Mark Jordan, or if you prefer to cook rather than look, you can join him for a master-class at Ocean.
Both the tour and master-class are followed by a three-course lunch created by Mark Jordan and will be accompanied by wines picked by the lovely Head Sommelier, Sergio dos Santos.
During our dinner at Ocean he kindly brought me two different red wines so I could choose the one I preferred – that is the kind of service that you remember (as long as you don’t drink too much of the wine…)
I’m told the seasonal menu will include pan-roast Jersey scallops, sautéed Jersey ormers, pea purée, paupiette of maize fed chicken, summer truffles, spring vegetables, thyme essence and raspberry nougatine served with pistachio crème.
The festival really should be a treat, especially if the weather is kind. Were we not producing the next issue of Spear’s, guest edited by Ben Goldsmith, during that week, I would be going back myself.
