A Million-Pound Life: ’20

By Spear's

How much is a banker’s life worth? Not very much, the baying crowds cry. And one banker would agree: he’s selling all the accoutrements of a life in the City – country house, car, boat – in a spot-the-ball competition whose tickets are ’20.

How much is a banker’s life worth? Not very much, the baying crowds cry. And one banker would agree: he’s selling all the accoutrements of a life in the City – country house, car, boat – in a spot-the-ball competition whose tickets are £20.

Now you may think that this is just another get-rich-quick scheme, since there are 200,000 tickets, netting Andrew Paul (firm as yet unidentified) £4 million if he sells all the tickets.

But Mr Paul says his motive is to divest himself of all reminders of his former life now that he is divorced. When one breaks up, it’s usually the love letters and photos (emails and Facebook profile pics?) which get torn up, but – being in the City – Mr Paul isn’t prepared to do things on a small scale. Like the equities he trades, everything must go.

If you don’t fancy the house et al, you can take £1 million in cash, which looks like it’s untaxable since you pay your tax on the ticket. A City brain to the end, Mr Paul.
