Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, Langkawi, Malaysia

By Spear's

Built in the style of a traditional Malay village in clusters of wooden buildings on stilts, the Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa stretches out along the white sandy Cenang beach. This 35-acre resort has just undergone an extensive multimillion-dollar refurbishment to ensure it offers every amenity the iscriminating traveller demands, such as a fitness area, a choice of dining options and complimentary WiFi on a best effort basis.
The renovation has also resulted in the hotel winning awards for its design and décor. Its wellness and rejuvenation centre has a state-of-the-art fitness centre, and the rebranded Pelangi Spa is in a Zeninspired setting offering a range of holistic oriental therapies. A full beauty and hairdressing service is also available. Also on offer are a wide choice of watersports from snorkelling to fishing, as well as tennis and squash courts and a great fun Children’s Club for those aged four to twelve.

WHO
Families and groups of friends from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore love holidaying here, while couples and honeymooners from as far afield as Europe,Australia and Hong Kong choose it for short breaks and romantic interludes.

WHEN
November to March is high season, when the weather is driest and the resort busiest, but there is sunshine throughout the year, and when the showers come the sun is not far behind. Humidity is at its highest in July and August.

HAVE
Pelangi Spa offers a whole world of massage experiences, from Thai to Indonesian, aromatherapy to hot stone, as well as its own traditional Malaysian massage, the Urut Melayu, which uses a mixture of kneading strokes and pressure on various energy points to soothe and unblock aching muscles.
An after-sun ritual remoisturises skin that has been overindulging in the sea as well as sunbathing, while there is a facial for every skin type, plus an express choice for guests with little time to spare.Other rituals, which can last from 90 minutes to four hours, include a couple’s special and a Honeymoon Package with wraps, scrubs, massage and a petal-filled bath. Kids and teens also have their own menu of manicures, pedicures and back massages.
The website malaysiahealthcare.com, an online platform endorsed by Tourism Malaysia, acts as a medical, spa and holiday consultant, with extensive knowledge and connections throughout the country.
The company offering this unique personal health concierge service also partners with leading hospitals, clinics and tour operators to provide travellers with a near hassle-free service.

DO
Make the most of the resort’s watersports facilities — snorkelling, waterskiing, sailing, fishing, banana boating and catamaran rides — not to mention the 800m white sandy beach edging the resort. For the active there is the fitness centre, tennis and squash courts, two lagoon-shaped swimming pools and a mini golf area and children’s pool.
Off the property there is, of course, the famous cable car which gives amazing views of the island and archipelago, which has been awarded World Geopark status by Unesco. A short walk will take you into town, while a visit to the market at Pantai Cenang is an experience, as well as being the place to find your souvenirs.

BEST
Sounding almost good enough to eat, first try the Tropical Lime and Ginger Buff, a gentle scrub for smoother skin, and follow it with Frangipani and Coconut Moisturiser.
