Puntacana Resort & Club, Dominican Republic

By Spear's

Only at PUNTACANA Resort & Club can you enjoy a Six Senses Spa and a stunning Caribbean setting.

A destination with few rivals, PUNTACANA Resort & Club has grown from an ecological idea to a world-class example of sustainable tourism on 26 pristine acres in the Dominican Republic. Over the years it has turned itself into one of the most visited Caribbean destinations and attracts visitors from all over the world. It even sports its own international airport.
It offers not just pristine beaches (five miles of them), but also a choice of hotels (one of which was designed by fashion icon Oscar de la Renta), residential villas, a plethora of restaurants, golf courses, its own marina and shopping village, an ecological foundation — and of course a Six Senses Spa.
This last is famed for its commitment to environmental and sustainable practices and is the ideal partner for such a resort; to date it is the only Six Senses Spa in the Americas. You’ll discover it within the La Cana Golf and Beach Club House, with its spacious reception and relaxation areas and elegant treatment rooms.

Well-heeled, affluent families of two and three generations holidaying in their private villas, couples at play on land and sea, children having fun and golfers throughout the year. It’s a holiday haven for all ages with a mix of European, American and South American guests.

It’s a tropical climate with average daily temperatures around 30°C throughout the year, with very little rain. It’s hot and humid from May to October, but the sea breezes help as a coolant.

Six Senses Spa and its treatments and journeys are imbued with its ‘Slow Life’ philosophy — Sustainable, Local, Organic, Wellness, Learning, Inspiring, Fun Experiences. At PUNTACANA Resort & Club, there is a wide range of innovative and comprehensive treatments and packages for couples, individuals and golfers. Echoing its Asian routes in both décor and treatments, guests can enjoy Thai massages, foot reflexology, acupressure and shiatsu, as well as a choice of scrubs and wraps; yoga and meditation are also available.
Treatments can either be enjoyed in the spa itself or in guest villas, suites or rooms. Not sure what to have? Six Senses Spa cleverly offers taster treatments lasting just 25 minutes so guests can experience a scrub, a foot or back massage, an eye treatment or mini manicure. Otherwise, opt for its Signature Massage, which comes in four guises depending what you need or how you feel — Detox, Energiser, Holistic or Oriental. A selection offacials and other beauty therapies are also available.

Make the most of the sea and all it offers, especially if visiting from November to March when it’s cold at home. The warmth of the Caribbean on a cold February morning is one of life’s great joys. Golfers are catered for royally, but this is also the place to join a yoga or tai chi class. If you’re looking for a culture trip, then head for the nation’s capital, Santo Domingo, with its historic area and cathedral.

The Caribbean Experience is almost four hours of jaw-dropping pampering using indigenous ingredients and traditional practices. First there’s a steam using tropical oils, then a scrub with carrot and coconut, which is followed by a hot stone massage with healing coconut oil and finally a natural facial of honey, brown sugar and jojoba oil.
