Malaysia’s rich melting pot

By Spear's

Asia is a captivating, colourful and intoxicatingly beautiful continent, and no country encapsulates this vibrancy more than Malaysia. Home to some of the world’s most beautiful natural gems, the country is bursting with verdant jungles and lush flora for as far as the eye can see.

Kuala Lumpur is a young, modern metropolis, providing an exciting contrast to the long history of the country, and is as much an economic powerhouse as it is home to some of Asia’s most exciting design, from the Petronas Towers to the Mughal, Islamic and Greco-Spanish influences that pepper the city. Thronging with trendy cafes, galleries and luxury shopping, Kuala Lumpur boasts an incredible amount to take in and visit, including the capital’s soft white beaches and ancient forests.

The country’s rich culinary heritage provides an interesting snapshot into its culture, from the intense aromas of Malay dishes to the spice of the Chinese kitchen. Malaysia offers some of Asia’s finest cuisine, and this passion for food has made it one the continent’s most exciting destinations.

Perhaps the most famous contribution to the culinary world is satay – small pieces of skewered meat, marinated in oil, honey, herbs and spices, barbecued over a charcoal fire. Served with cucumber wedges, onions and rice cakes called ketupat, they are simple and moreish.

Considered a national favourite, nasi lemak is a rich, creamy, coconut milk-based rice dish, is often flavoured with pandan leaf, ginger and lemongrass and served with fried peanuts and anchovies, hard-boiled egg, cucumber slices and a sambal.

Defined by its diversity and multiculturalism, Malaysia is an opulent explosion of colour, culinary delights and natural splendour, and is certainly a destination worth experiencing.
