The Vanity Fair parties staged at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc are the stuff of legend – in more ways than one. In a new book celebrating the hotel’s 150th anniversary, former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter describes the evening when the magazine’s London editor, Henry Porter, got stuck in a bathroom. With Porter’s shouts drowned out by the noise of the party, he ‘was about to give up’, writes Carter. Then, ‘a man’s voice said: “Stand back from the door!” Henry hopped up on to the seat. There was a loud sound as the man on the other side kicked in the door. It was Jean-Claude Van Damme.’
Only, that’s not quite what happened, Porter tells Hedgehog. In that case, maybe he’d care to set the record straight? ‘No, I can’t be bothered to be honest. I’m too pissed off about Graydon. It’s just crappy, stupid, pathetic, bad behaviour by an old friend.’ What’s more, Porter says, he’d ‘kind of reserved the story’ for his own book. ‘It’s a much funnier story which I’d prefer to tell myself than have some friend brutalise it.’ Ouch.
