STEP: Earl’s children challenge his will

By Spear's

Antony Lambton died in 2006, leaving his entire estate to his only son Edward, known as Ned

The children of the late Lord Lambton, Earl of Durham, are disputing his extensive estate in north-east England.

Antony Lambton died in 2006, leaving his entire estate to his only son Edward, known as Ned. However, the late earl had lived in self-imposed exile in Italy for the last thirty years of his life, largely because of a sex scandal that caused him to feature prominently in the pages of the News of the World.

After his death, three of the earl’s daughters asked Ned for a share of the estate, on the grounds that they would be able to cite Italian forced heirship laws to establish a claim in the English courts. Ned has refused to comply, noting that his father’s will, executed in 2004, does not mention his sisters, and it has never been the subject of a probate challenge. He has, however, offered each of them GBP1 million in settlement, according to newspaper reports.
