As well as being excellent fun, the awards have established themselves as a respected indicator of achievement in the private client world, and show that Spear’s is innovative and independent minded in rewarding success.
Last night the great and good of the private client world descended on Phillips de Pury in Howick Place for the annual Spear’s Wealth Management Awards: the 600 guests who turned up were treated to mojitos, wine, canapés and some rather racy photography on the gallery walls. But as well as being excellent fun, the night showed two important things: first, that the awards, now in their sixth year, have established themselves as a respected indicator of achievement in the private client world, and secondly, that Spear’s is innovative and independent-minded in rewarding success.
The guests at last night’s awards attested to the standing in which the event is held; from the world of private banking: Daniel Pinto, Julien Sevaux and Guy Paterson from Stanhope, David Poole from Citi, William Drake from Lord North Street and Charlie Hoffman from HSBC were among the many who joined Spear’s for its annual knees-up. David Sherborne, the barrister from 5 Raymond Buildings who is representing all the victims in the Leveson inquiry, and Mark Stephens, the driving force behind Finer Stephens Innocent and formerly Julian Assange’s lawyer, were also two of the many high profile guests to hurry in out of the cold for a few warming mojitos.
Some of the winners last night might cause a stir for not being the ‘obvious’ choices, but all were chosen carefully by Spear’s and external judges for success and innovation over the past year. Charles Russell, winner of Family Law Firm of the Year, impressed the judges by running an increasingly international practice and maintaining superb levels of client care. One of the judges said it had proved itself to be the ‘deservedly the first choice for many clients’.
Charles Russell won Law Firm of the Year (Family)
On the financial side, Barclays, after a less than glorious year in some respects, were the deserving winners of two awards, Banker of the Year and Wealth Management Innovator of the Year. Stanhope impressed with absolute client retention, an increase of 11 per cent in AUM and a broadened platform with the acquisition of Jewson Associates.
Spear’s will continue to keep a careful watch over the private client world during the next twelve months, as will be reflected again, we hope, in next year’s awards. We also look forward to another excellent party.
