Nick Clegg's 'I'm Sorry' is anything but a video nasty

The AutoTuned remix of Nick Clegg’s I’m Sorry speech (see the video below) has been a stroke of genius. Needless to say, then, that it would have been impossible for anyone in the political class to come up with it.

Until its electro-cool stylings hit the web, all Nick Clegg had was a second-degree apology – I’m not sorry for breaking my promise, I’m sorry for *making* my promise – the sort that sophists infuriate with.

All he had, that is, apart from a dismal favourability rating (-26 per cent) and a 13 per cent poll rating for the Lib Dems (down from 23 per cent at the 2010 election). Oh, and a reputation as a Tory lickspittle who couldn’t get the cork out of a bottle of Chablis let alone House of Lords reform through Parliament.

But now Clegg has a sense of humour, which is worth a lot more to him than House of Lords reform, because a sense of humour means you are potentially electable – human even. By acknowledging this video and even allowing it to be released as a charity single for a hospital in his constituency he shows that he is also a decent guy, in the call-me-Dave mode.

If I were one of Nick’s counsellors – and thank goodness I am not – I would have been desperately trying for something to relaunch Clegg. I’m Sorry has worked – but not at all as intended.
