This year’s Private Business Awards shortlist proves that if you want to go far in business these days, digital technology prowess and global reach are key. Most of the recently announced finalists have demonstrated an innovative use of technology and a good track record in international exports.
Brian Henderson, partner and Private Business Awards leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers, which sponsors the event in association with HSBC Private Bank and Numis Securities, said in a press release: ‘What these businesses share, apart from their success and valuable contribution to the UK economy, is their innovative and exciting approach.’
The awards comprise ten categories including Social Enterprise of the Year, Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year CEO of the Year and Family Business of the Year. Some of the shortlisted businesses are family-run bath and beauty cosmetic manufacturer Grace Cole, which has a range at House of Fraser and Boots, kitchenware producer Joseph Joseph, stocked at House of Fraser and Debenhams, cost-cutting travel initiative Liftshare.com, online wine retailer Naked Wines and music and media identifying technology creator Shazam.
Charlie Hoffman, managing director of HSBC Private Bank (UK) Ltd, outlined the importance of private businesses to the economy, and of celebrating entrepreneurship nationally. He said: ‘The award that really stood out to me was the Private Business Woman of the Year Award whose entrants were outstanding, having achieved so much both within their own businesses and also in their contribution to the wider community.’

Among the Private Business Woman of the Year nominees were Professor Alyson Warhurst of global risk and strategic consulting firm Maplecroft, Catherine Beare of travel add-ons company Holiday Extras Investments Limited and Tracy Lynn Mort MBE of the aforementioned Grace Cole Limited.
The winners of the Private Business Awards 2014, drawn from over 1000 UK-wide entries, will be announced at a dinner to be held at The Guildhall in London on 10 September 2014.
