How HNWs can save the world from climate change: The latest issue of Spear’s out now

By Alec Marsh

From William Boyd to Lily Cole by way of Niall Ferguson, Cherie Blair, Alexander McCall Smith and Marco Pierre White, the January/February edition is vintage Spear’s – get your copy now, writes Alec Marsh

For those heartily sick of the progress or otherwise of the UK’s departure from the European Union, this edition of Spear’s will provide some relief. I say some, because any relief is likely to be displaced by a more apocalyptic concern, namely climate change, which poses a clear and present danger to our civilisation. In our cover story – illustrated by Adam Dant’s interpretation of a modern-day HNW Icarus falling from the sun – Johan Rockström, Mark Campanale and David Blood make the point forcefully and persuasively that the moment has come for capital to step in to help solve the problem. The bonus is that cleaning up the planet’s act is also $26 trillion business opportunity.

This edition is also fully loaded with literary fascination thanks to two of the nation’s favourite novelists: our diary is by Alexander McCall Smith, and in this edition’s star interview, Spear’s meets William Boyd.

Taking our cue from Boyd, in ‘A good man in Africa’, William Cash reports on the great work done by Esmond Bradley Martin, who was murdered last year, to save the rhino from extinction from poaching. Christopher Jackson, meanwhile, goes on a learning journey for our feature on the impact that artificial intelligence has on education – speaking to Sir Anthony Seldon and the MP Nicky Morgan among others luminaries.

We also hear from Lily Cole, social entrepreneur, model, writer and actress and we have Niall Ferguson in our Midas slot – which is especially revealing. Another undoubted star of this edition is Cherie Blair, who is in our philanthropy slot, talking about her foundation for women on. William Sitwell, our vegan-baiting food supremo, brings us a vintage article this issue, interviewing the one-time enfant terrible of British cooking Marco Pierre White.

And just when you thought we might be neglecting the field of science – we have Martin Rees, the Astronomer Royal, as our Liquid Lunch. He talks to Rasika Sittamparam about climate change, Mars and mankind’s cyborg future, among other things. We also have our 2019 Reputation Managers Index on page 65, bringing you our definitive listing of the best HNW advisers in reputation law and management. We also have guest articles from industry experts Edward Amory, Dominic Crossley and David Engel. All this, plus our regulars, including Jason Cowley, Sam Leith, Lucia van der Post, John Arlidge, Clive Aslet, Tanya Gold and more.

Enjoy.
