David Walliams is a comedian, TV star and author and has an estimated net worth of £17 million.
Son of Peter and Kathleen Williams, David Walliams was born in Merton, London on August 20, 1971. A student of drama at the University of Bristol, one of his first jobs was as a writer for The Ant and Dec Show.
Twenty years on, he has become a celebrity, equally renowned for his gallant fundraising endeavours as he is for his on-screen performances. For charity, he swam the arduous 21 miles across the English Channel to France in 2006. He also raised a massive £2.5 million, overcoming illness and injury, as he swam the length of the Thames for Sport Relief. His first major brush with fame came as Matt Lucas’ funny friend in UK’s most popular comedy show, Little Britain.
Since venturing into the realm of children’s literature in 2008, Walliams has published five children’s books — The Boy in the Dress (2008), Mr Stink (2009, awarded People’s Book Prize), Billionaire Boy (2010), Gangsta Granny (2011) and Ratburger (2012) — which reportedly sold 2.2 million copies altogether in the UK and a further 200,000 worldwide, netting him nearly £15 million and earning him the sobriquet ‘the new Roald Dahl’.
In May 2010, he tied the knot with model Lara Stone (29), with whom he has a baby boy, Alfred. After dating for seven months, he proposed to her aided by a £100,000 vintage Tiffany ring hidden inside a burger while vacationing in LA. Guests at their traditional wedding at Claridges Hotel, central London, included ex-girlfriends Natalie Imbruglia and Denise Van Outen. His marriage created a sensation because of Walliams penchant for effeminate roles during his hit TV show, Little Britain. Walliams set the record straight by saying “people normally relate femininity with homosexuality, which is not always the case”.
His autobiography, Camp David, relays the hardships on the way to becoming a great comedian, talks about his love life and his bond with his father, who died in 2007. In recent years, Walliams has also written and starred in BBC sitcoms Come Fly with Me and Big School.
One of the judges of the primetime UK TV show Britain’s Got Talent, Walliams’ recent credits as an actor and TV presenter include Marmaduke, Dinner for Schmucks, Doctor Who, Blandings, The Royal Bodyguard and Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.
