Olympic Gold medallist at Rio 2016 and one of the contestants for I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!, Great Britain’s hockey star Samantha Quek’s net worth is guesstimated to be over £4 million.
Born to Singaporean Albert Quek and Brit Marilyn Quek in Wirral, Liverpool on October 18, 1988, Samantha Ann Quek began playing field hockey since the age of 10. Samantha Quek played football too for Tranmere Rovers, but chose to embrace hockey at 16. During her BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Science course at Leeds Metropolitan (renamed Leeds Beckett) University, she earned her first international cap (2008).
What did Quek make her millions?
Although omitted from the 2012 Olympics in London, Quek soon became an important player in defence, subsequently winning silver medals at the EuroHockey Nations Championship in 2013 (losing to the Netherlands) and the 2014 Commonwealth Games (losing to Australia). In 2014, the Scouse lass joined premier division side Holcombe and also captained England in the absence of Kate Richardson-Walsh at the Champions Trophy in Argentina. She played every single match until the quarter-finals despite two broken ribs.
In August 2015, Quek won Gold playing for England at the European Championships (London), beating World and Olympic Champions the Netherlands. The final saw the Liverpudlian winning Man of the Match.
Quek has also appeared on BBC One’s game show For What It’s Worth (May 2016) along with her boyfriend, 30-year-old property investor and owner of Antona Student Properties, Thomas Mairs, who himself appeared on Channel 4’s The Secret Millionaire (2010). Dating since 2013 after meeting in the Liverpool nightclub Alma De Cuba, the lovebirds have been living in Heswall ever since.
Selected for Team Great Britain to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics, Quek went on to grab Gold—Great Britain’s first women’s Olympic hockey Gold, once again defeating the Netherlands (via penalties). During the Games, Quek earned her 50th cap for Great Britain and tallied 125 games for Great Britain and England combined.
An outspoken advocate of Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) for athletes, supporting it as a “potentially lifesaving practice”, Quek condemned a leak of information by some Russian hackers in September 2016 about a few of her teammates and herself being granted TUE. The hacks were condemned worldwide.
Quek who is an ardent fan of Liverpool F.C., has also modelled for Forever Sport magazine.
Quek is the latest contender for ITV’s Ant and Dec hosted I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! and will be the 18th sportsperson to brave the jungle.
