Soho stalwart Randall & Aubin recently started delivering restaurant-quality lunches to office workers in central London. Preliminary reactions from a Spear’s tasting panel were very positive. Crab cakes with watercress – which looked more like spinach to us – contained ‘proper crab meat, including a nice bit of claw,’ and a smoked chicken salad was ‘the best chicken salad I’ve ever had, with lovely tender meat – although it must be said I don’t eat much chicken salad.’
Chef Ed Baines calls it ‘the Brain Food menu’: a seafood salad was presumably riddled with Omega-3s and contained generous strips of octopus. Its dressing was slightly greasy, however, and some of the leaves had wilted during its two-mile trip to our offices. (Perhaps it would be better served on the side.)
One Spear’s staffer argued that ‘some people have an aversion to paying nearly £10 a dish for food that comes in plastic,’ but absent a full dinner service with silver cutlery and a travelling sommelier, it’s difficult to see how this could rectified. Overall, we found the new menu delicious.
