Dave Chappelle is an American standup comic, actor, producer and writer.

Childhood and Education
David Khari Webber Chappelle was born to university professors Yvonne K. Reed and William David Chappelle III on August 24, 1973 in Washington D.C.
Young Dave Chappelle, who was raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, began living with his mom in Washington after his parents divorced. He graduated in Theatre Arts from Duke Ellington School of the Arts in 1991.

Career breakthrough
A fleeting TV appearance in a montage of the first episode of ABC’s America’s Funniest People in 1990 prompted Chappelle to move to New York in pursuit of a comic career. His appearance in HBO’s Def Comedy Jam in 1992 led to regular guest appearances on late night TV shows including The Late Show With David Letterman, Politically Incorrect and Late Night With Conan O’Brien. He also spent time opening for singer/songwriter Aretha Franklin.

Films
In 1993, Chappelle was cast in Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Soon major roles came his way in the form of Joe’s Apartment, in 1996, Half Baked and Woo in 1998, 200 Cigarettes and Blue Streak in 1999, Screwed in 2000, Undercover Brother in 2002, as well as his documentary Dave Chappelle’s Block Party in 2006. He also played a supporting role in the latest Bradley Cooper/Lady Gaga multiple-Oscar nominated film A Star Is Born in 2018.

TV
Making his TV debut with the Tim Allen sitcom Home Improvement in 1995, Chappelle’s character was given its own offshoot sitcom Buddies in 1996.
In 2003, the stand-up’s sketch comedy Chappelle’s Show on Comedy Central lasted a successful 28 episodes until Chappelle quit in 2006. The show won three BET Comedy Awards and three NAMIC Vision Awards between 2004 and 2005.

Chappelle’s TV appearances include The Larry Sanders Show in 1998, Wanda at Large in 2003 and Saturday Night Live (SNL) in 2016.
His stand-up specials comprise HBO Comedy Half-Hour in 1998, Dave Chappelle: Killin’ Them Softly in 2000, Dave Chappelle: For What It’s Worth in 2004, and the four Netflix deals worth $80 million, Deep in the Heart of Texas: Dave Chappelle Live at Austin City Limits, The Age of Spin: Dave Chappelle Live at the Hollywood Palladium, Dave Chappelle: Equanimity and Dave Chappelle: The Bird Revelation in 2017.

Awards and Accolades
Chappelle’s awards include two Primetime Emmy Awards between 2017 and 2018 and two Best Comedy Album Grammys between 2018 and 2019. He also won a Black Reel Award for SNL in 2017.

Personal life
Chappelle, became a muslim in 1998, lives in a 65-acre ranch near Yellow Springs, Ohio with wife Elaine Mendoza Erfe (married in 2001) and three children—a daughter Sonal and two sons Ibrahim and Sulayman. He also reportedly owns at least four houses in Xenia, Ohio.
