British cyclist Simon Yates has a net worth reported to be in the millions.
Born in Bury, England on August 7, 1992, Simon Yates alongside his twin brother Adam was introduced to the sport of cycling by their father John Yates―himself a cyclist and an athlete who ran for Horwich RMI Harriers. While recuperating from a car accident, he took both his nine-year-old kids to his cycling club Bury Clarion at the Manchester Velodrome. Hooked on, both began riding for their dad’s club.
After collecting several titles at Bury Clarion, Simon Yates joined British Cycling’s endurance academy programme and won the Madison at the Junior Track World Championship in 2010 (with Dan McLay).
Yates was selected for the Olympic Academy programme at 18 and was also picked for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Soon followed impressive finishes in 2011, including a stage victory at the “baby Tour de France” or Tour de l’Avenir. In 2012, he won the Senior British madison title.
At the 2013 Track World Championships, he won the points race Gold to become Britain’s first after his current coach Chris Newton (2002). Same year, he got his road breakthrough for the British national team. Yates then rode for Britain at the 2013 Tour de l’Avenir, where he won the fifth and sixth Stage races―finishing an overall tenth. He then represented the British national team in the Tour of Britain, winning Stage Six, finishing third overall and being voted best rider in the under-23 category.
Both brothers joined ORICA-SCOTT GreenEDGE, the Australian UCI World Tour team, in 2014. In his Tour of Turkey race, Yates broke his collarbone at Stage 3, but recovered to come in seventh overall, with Adam winning it. With only five days to go, he was selected to represent ORICA-SCOTT at Tour de France.
In 2015, Yates was placed fifth overall in the Tour of the Basque Country (April), sixth overall in the Tour de Romandie (April) and fifth overall in the Critérium du Dauphine (June). Consequently, Yates got the White Jersey as best young rider. Again selected for the Tour de France, Yates finished eighth in Stage 3 and 11th on the queen stage of the race, Stage 20.
The following year, a medical test during Paris-Nice in April saw Yates being issued a four-month ban by the UCI for “non-intentional doping”, preventing him from riding in the Tour de France. However, named to start the 2016 Vuelta a España, a resurgent Yates won a solo victory in Stage 6 after slipping through a breakaway group. It was the first stage victory in a Grand Tour for either of the Yates brothers.
Significant wins at two prestigious Stage races followed for Yates in 2017 with the Paris-Nice and the Tour de Romandie. Finishing an overall seventh at the Tour de France (July 1-23) after assuming joint leadership with Colombian Esteban Chavez, Yates again grabbed the young rider classification like his brother did in 2016.
Yates draws an estimated salary of $15,720 at ORICA-SCOTT.(Celebrityglad.com)
