Each week, Spear’s highlights one outstanding super-prime property or rare find on the market. This week, a plush St Andrews pad providing a ‘front row seat’ for next month’s golf.

Just in time for the landmark 150th Open Championship which will take place on St Andrews’ historic Old Course next month, HNW buyers have a rare opportunity to purchase one of only two properties available at the Hamilton Grand, which overlooks the 18th hole of the sprawling green course.

A stunning red-sandstone building built in 1895 by Thomas Hamilton, residents at the Hamilton Grand will have an unrivalled view of the gameplay taking place on 10th-17th July, as well as excellent views of the Ancient Clubhouse and the West Sands beach.

First built as a hotel – which was famously Scotland’s first to provide both cold and hot running water in each bedroom, as well as the first such establishment to have an elevator – the property was later used by the RAF in the Second World War before being purchased by the University of St Andrews, which used it as halls of residence for students for more than 50 years. In 2009, it was converted into a set of luxury flats – of which only two remain available today.

The interiors for Apartment 26, shown here, have been designed by the Glasgow boutique firm OCCA design, who have melded contemporary elements with traditional Scottish hallmarks. The main living space pairs together an ornate fireplace with upholstered furnishings and ambient mood-lighting. A Juliet balcony offering panoramic views of the town, which are complemented by the sprawling golf-course views from the decking at the top of the Hamilton Grand, where spectators will get a ‘front row seat’ for the Open.

The decor in each of the two bedrooms is elegantly subdued, with a master bedroom containing pared back slate-coloured walls and monochromatic furnishings and the other painted in an alluring neutral green, with matching bedding.

The sesquicentennial sporting event is special for another reason – it’s the 30th time the beautiful Scottish town’s golfing ground has played host to the sporting event, capping off a long and rich history tying the town to the tournament.

St Andrews remains ever popular as both a holiday destination and getaway for HNWs, many of whom are drawn by the lustrous appeal of the university town’s history and the beautiful ruins of St Andrews Cathedral. With green landscapes stretching for miles, the Hamilton Grand is a peaceful paradise that makes for a comfortable pied-à-terre – whether you’re glued to the golfing action or otherwise.
