Mel B net worth

By Suren Prasad

Mel B was born to a British mother and a Nevisian father on May 29, 1975, in Harehills, North England. Growing up in Leeds, Brown studied Performing Arts at Intake High School, but how much is Mel B’s net worth?

After a stint as a dancer at a holiday resort in Blackpool, she became part of a pop music band called Touch. Soon, she was selected for a new pop group at an audition advertised by The Stage magazine, to which the other future Spice Girls also responded.

Did her time as a Spice Girl make her a multimillionaire or was it her solo career?

All five girls came together to form the Spice Girls in 1994, the best-selling female band of all time. To distinguish her from Mel C (Melanie Chisholm), another band member, she was called Mel B.

Their breakthrough single came in 1996 with their debut hit, Wannabe, which shot to number one in over 30 countries. Later that decade, they released their debut album, Spice, selling more than 28 million copies worldwide. Subsequently, Brown was nicknamed ‘Scary Spice’ by the media for her wild and in-your-face personality.

Recording worldwide sales of 75 million album units worth a total $55 million, the Spice Girls were the biggest pop sensation since The Beatles. Their name has been recorded in the Guinness Book of Records for ‘Most Consecutive Number Ones for a New Act’ and ‘Most Number One Entries in the UK Charts’.

Between 1996 and 2001, Brown embarked on several global tours with the Spice Girls, which grossed an impressive $500-800 million in total.

Following an underperforming third album, The Spice Girls disbanded permanently to embark on solo careers. Prior to disbanding, Brown joined Virgin Records to release her first solo single I Want You Back with rapper Missy Elliot. Besides topping the UK Singles Chart, it was a global hit selling 218,000 copies.

Hot, her debut album, was released just a month before Forever, the third Spice Girls album in 2000. It went on to sell an underwhelming 200,000 copies.

Brown joined the other Spice girls for a sell-out reunion tour in 2007/2008, which raked in more than $70 million worldwide, earning the group a reported £10 million each.

In 2011, Mel B served on the judging panel for The X Factor Australia. She also judged the eighth season of America’s Got Talent along with Heidi Klum in 2013. In June 2014, she was made the fourth judge for The X Factor UK along with Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell. She has also worked as a presenter on Australia’s Dancing with the Stars and, more recently, as a co-presenter on NBC’s flagship morning show Today.

The multi-faceted entertainer has been an ambassador for the weight loss products firm Jenny Craig for the past four years. She is also a partner with her husband in a top-selling alkaline waters company in the US, Real Water, and an Australian health food company, Anskos.

In 2009, she released Totally Fit, a health and workout DVD followed by her own video game, Get Fit with Mel B for Xbox 360 Kinect, Wii and PlayStation in 2010. She also models for UK’s biggest lingerie line, Ultimo Lingerie.

In terms of philanthropy, the star supports the breast cancer campaign Pose for the Cure and In My Name, a campaign that fights world poverty.
