'Hybrid supercars' should be an oxymoron. Gas-guzzling V8 engines and the word 'eco' have never gone together. But some carmakers are launching new ranges that marry speed performance with low carbon emissions.

McLaren chairman Ron Dennis emphasised the exclusivity that comes with the P1 when he introduced it at the Geneva Motor Show. Just 375 units will be in production and are priced at £866,000 each. All orders have been filled for these hybrid supercars.

Engineers from Porsche's race car division designed and developed the hybrid 918 Spyder. The car combines racing speed with low-emission efficiency.
