More than 30 years in the field have taught Lisa Spearman the fundamentals of private client service. ‘It’s about making complex issues easy to understand,’ she says. That’s quite an art in an area where complications abound and solutions aren’t always obvious.
But it’s a challenge she happily takes up. ‘We don’t blind people with science,’ she explains. ‘What clients need to understand is what the issue is for them and the options available for solving it – and the pros and cons of each.’
This advice is tailored to clients who come from ‘all walks of life’. Spearman explains: ‘There is no one-size-fits-all solution: every client needs to be properly considered, and the right path found for each client.’
These days Spearman spends much time ‘demystifying’ the ‘increasingly tedious’ landscape for HNWs, and looks to prioritise ‘agile and flexible’ strategies. In her other role as chair of the private client committee at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, she represents the industry while liaising with the taxman and the public.
What does she enjoy most about her job? ‘It’s the interaction with the individuals and applying technical knowledge to real-life problems to help them – that’s the thing that I find most satisfying.’
