Five years at Freshfields mastering the nuances of corporate tax isn’t the standard route to a career in family law. But Caroline Park has broken the mould, both in her route to the top and in becoming the first partner at Hughes Fowler Carruthers to have come up through the ranks in around a decade. ‘My time at Freshfields equipped me for dealing with complicated structures,’ she says. ‘I made the move into family law in 2008 and
I was fortunate then that HFC were willing to take a punt on me.’
Park’s skills align with the current direction of family law in which an understanding of complex structures is increasingly valuable. Park is equally at home hunting down assets for the weaker party or protecting them for the stronger, going, she says, ‘above and beyond’ for her clients.
Park also enjoys the surprises of her profession, including being present at the drilling-open of a safe in pursuit of hidden jewels (‘I didn’t wield the drill myself’). But the essence of Park is the line with which she ends her interview with Spear’s: ‘I love the client contact and pride myself on making a difference for my clients at particularly challenging times for them.’
